[JLPT grammar] Using 上手 to talk about oneself sounds boastful and is thus not used very often.
Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N5 course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

私はサッカーが上手です。
*わたしはさっかーがじょうずです。

私はサッカーが上手です。
→私はサッカーがとくいです。
I’m good at soccer.
Using 上手 to talk about oneself sounds boastful and is thus not used very often.
When talking about oneself, とくい(得意) is used.
×私はサッカーが上手です。
◎田中(たなか)さんはサッカーが上手です。
◎私はサッカーがとくいです。
e.g.
スミスさんは日本語(にほんご)が上手です。
Smith-san speaks good Japanese.
私はケーキを作(つく)るのがとくいです。
I am good at making cakes.
