Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for beginners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?

 

[Student’s sentence]

 

A: 週末、どこかに行きますか。
B: まだ、知りません。

*A: しゅうまつ、どこかにいきますか。
B: まだ、しりません。

**A: shuumatsu, dokoka ni ikimasu ka.
B: mada, shirimasen.

[My correction]

 

A:週末、どこかに行きますか。

B: まだ、知りません。​

→B: まだ、わかりません。

mada, wakarimasen.

 

A: Are you going anywhere this weekend?

B: I’m not sure yet.

 

 

知りません vs わかりません

 

“知りません” means “I don’t have the knowledge or information about it,” so you can’t use it for your own decisions.

“わかりません” means “I haven’t decided yet.”

Since you want to say that you haven’t made plans yet, you should use “わかりません.”

 

 

Example sentences:

A：野球(やきゅう)のルールを知っていますか。

B：いいえ、知りません。

 

A：yakyuu no ru-ru o shitte imasu ka.

B：iie, shirimasen.

A: Do you know the rules of baseball?

B: No, I don’t know.

 

 

A：週末(しゅうまつ)天気(てんき)がよければ、野球を見(み)に行(い)きますか。

B：うーん、まだわかりませんね。

 

A：shuumatsu tenki ga yokereba, yakyuu o mi ni ikimasuka.

B：u-n, mada wakarimasen ne.

A: If the weather is good this weekend, will you go to see a baseball game?

B: Well, I don’t know yet.
