＝（動くもの）が（何か）にぶつかる

A moving object hits something.

 

あたる

＝（動かないもの）が（何か）にあたる

An object that doesn’t move hits something.

 

Example

人(ひと)と人(ひと)がぶつかる。

People bump into each other.

 

虫(むし)がまどにぶつかる。

An insect hits the window.

 

石(いし)を投(な)げたら、犬(いぬ)にあたった。

I threw a rock and it hit a dog.
