[JLPT grammar] Difference between 赤(あか)になる and 赤くなる.

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N4 course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student’s sentence]

お酒を飲むと、顔が赤になります。

*おさけをのむと、かおがあかになります。

[My correction]

お酒を飲むと、顔が赤になります。
→お酒を飲むと、顔が赤くなります。
When I drink alcohol, my face turns red.

赤になります’s noun is “赤”.
赤くなります’s “赤く” is an i-adjective (赤い).
赤になります indicates that your face turns red from another color.
赤くなります indicates that your face becomes red or grows more red.

e.g.
信号(しんごう)が赤になりました。
The traffic light turned red.

彼(かれ)の肌(はだ)が日焼(ひや)けで赤くなっていた。
His skin had all turned red from sunburn.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊
