Today, I am going to share a homework correction from my JLPT Course! The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

 

[Student’s sentence]

 

正午ごろ(Around noon)
A：昼ごはん、食べた？
B：ううん、食べなかった。

*しょうごごろ
A：ひるごはん、たべた？
B：ううん、たべなかった。

[My correction]

 

正午ごろ
A：昼ごはん、食べた？
B：ううん、食べなかった。

→ B：ううん、食べていない。
​
Around noon
A: Did you have lunch?
B: No, I haven’t.

 

When someone asks if you’ve eaten lunch around noon, it’s appropriate to say 「まだ食べていない」 (I haven’t eaten yet) because there’s still a possibility that you might eat later.

「まだ〜ていない」 means “I haven’t done it yet, but I might do it later.”

食べなかった(past tense, negative) is used when it’s past lunchtime, meaning “I didn’t eat, and it’s too late to eat now.”​​

A: 今(いま)人気(にんき)の、あの映画(えいが)、見(み)た？
B: ううん、まだ見ていない。
A: Have you seen that popular movie that’s out now?
B: No, I haven’t seen it yet.​

 

​
A: 去年(きょねん)すごく人気があった、あの映画、見た？
B: ううん、見なかった。​​​​
A: Did you see that movie that was really popular last year?
B: No, I didn’t see it.
