Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for beginners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?
[Student’s sentence]
atsui to, eakon o tsukete kudasai.

[My correction]
atsui to, eakon o tsukete kudasai.
atsukattara, eakon o tsukete kudasai.
If it is hot, please turn on the air conditioning.
You cannot use ‘〜と’ to express a request or someone’s will.
Since ‘〜てください’ is a request (asking someone to do something), it reflects a person’s will. That’s why it doesn’t work with ‘〜と’.
To express your will or make a request, use ‘〜たら’. ‘〜たら’ is more flexible and can be used in various situations, including giving commands or making requests.
Examples:
onaka ga suitarra, koko ni aru onigiri demo tabete kudasai.
If you get hungry, please feel free to eat one of these rice balls.
samukattara, mado o shimete kudasai.
If it gets cold, please close the window.
I hope my explanation helps you.😊
