こんにちは、ちか先生です。

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice question for JLPT prep.

This one’s for pre-advanced learners (JLPT N2)!

Can you choose the correct answer?

[Practice Question]

彼は、彼女と何も話す(__)なく、帰っていった。

*かれは、かのじょと なにも はなす(__)なく、かえっていった。

1 ほど

2 ところ

3 もの

4 こと

[Answer]

彼は、彼女と何も話す(4 こと)なく、帰っていった。

He went home without saying a word to her.

〜ことなく

= “without doing 〜”.

It is a formal or written style of 〜ないで.

Structure:

Verb (dictionary-form) + ことなく

Verb: 話す

→ 話すことなく

= “without talking”

The word that fits naturally between 話す and なく is こと(話すことなく),

so you should choose こと.

✖Other Choices:

1 ほど

→ This shows degree or extent

×話すほどなく

2 ところ

→ This shows a scene or situation.

×話すところなく

3 もの

→ This shows a reason or something obvious.

×話すものなく

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
