パンにかわってケーキを食べます。

パンにかわってケーキを食べます。
→パンのかわりにケーキを食べます。

I eat cake instead of bread.

 

“かわりに” can be used in the sense of simple substitution, but “かわって” cannot.

“かわりに” should be used in this sentence because it indicates that the cake is eaten as a substitute for bread.
“かわりに” and “かわって” can only be interchanged if they represent a change in role.

 

◎ パソコンのかわりにタブレットを使(つか)ってください。
(× パソコンにかわってタブレットを使ってください。)
Use a tablet instead of a computer.

◎ 部長(ぶちょう)のかわりに私が出張(しゅっちょう)しました。
◎ 部長にかわって私が出張しました。
I went on a business trip in place of the director.
