[Answer]
彼は大変な苦労の(4 末)、ついに今年、ノーベル賞を受賞した。
After many hardships, he finally won the Nobel Prize this year.
〜末
= “at the end of ~” or “after a long period of ~”
〜末 is used to show a final result after a long time of effort, struggle, or consideration.
A末、B
A (a long time/effort) → B (the final result)
In this sentence:
A = 大変な苦労
= great hardship (a long process)
B = ノーベル賞を受賞した
= won the Nobel Prize (the result)
Because he went through a long period of hardship and then finally achieved this great result, 末 is the perfect fit.
✖ Other choices:
〜限り
“as much as possible.”
〜以上
“because…” or “now that…”
〜以来
“ever since,” and implies something has continued.
These do not fit the meaning of the sentence.
I hope this explanation helps! 😊
