Today, I’m sharing a practice question for JLPT prep.
This one’s for beginners (JLPT N5)!
Can you choose the correct answer?
[Practice Question]
A：今日のテスト、できましたか。
B：べんきょうした(＿＿)、あまりできませんでした。
*A: きょうのテスト、できましたか。
*B: べんきょうした(＿＿)、あまりできませんでした。

A：今日のテスト、できましたか。
B：べんきょうした(4 けど)、あまりできませんでした。
A: How was today’s test?
B: I studied, but I couldn’t do very well.
けど
= “but” (clause connector)
We need to show contrast between two parts.
Part 1:
べんきょうした (I studied)
→ positive action
Part 2:
あまりできませんでした (couldn’t do well)
→ negative result
The result is the opposite of what we expect.
So, けど is the best choice.
Other Choices:
(だ)から
→ These mean “so” or “because.”
でも
→ This also means “but.”
→ It starts a new sentence. It cannot connect two clauses.
◎Correct: べんきょうしました。でも、あまりできませんでした。
✖ Incorrect: べんきょうしたでも、あまりできませんでした。
