[JLPT grammar] 買っちゃう, 買っとく, same meaning?

Today I am going to share the Q&A quoted from my JLPT N3 course!

 

[Question]

先生、contractionの
買っちゃう=already bought?
買っとく=already bought?

同じ意味ですか?
same meaning?

 

[My Reply]

買っちゃう(contraction)
=買ってしまう
〜てしまう:完了(かんりょう complete)、後悔(こうかい regret)

買っとく(contraction)
=買っておく
〜ておく:準備(じゅんび preparation)

e.g.
ケーキを買っちゃった。(past tense of ちゃう)
=ケーキを買ったことを後悔している。買わないほうがよかったと思っている。
I regret buying the cake. I wish I had not bought it.

ケーキを買っといた。(past tense of とく)
=パーティーがあるから、そのためにケーキを買った。
We have a party and I bought a cake for it.
