さあ
hmm…/well…

さあ is used when you are unsure and can’t provide a clear response.

 

Let’s practice:

1
A: 田中(たなか)さん、どこにいるか知(し)ってますか？
B: さあ、知りません。
A: Do you know where Tanaka-san is?
B: Hmm…, I don’t know.

A: パーティー用(よう)のジュース、このぐらいで足()りるかな？
B: さあ、どうだろうね。もう少(すこ)し買(か)っておく？
A: Do you think we have enough juice for the party?
B: Hmm, not sure. Should we grab a few more?
