Adding 〜てあげる implies a sense of doing a favor, as in “I am kindly doing this for you.” However, it is inappropriate to use 〜てあげる in this context, as returning borrowed money is an obligation, not a favor.

 

Examples:
お客様(きゃくさま)を席(せき)に案内(あんない)します
I will show the customer to their seat.
(×お客様を席に案内してあげます
As a waiter, guiding customers to their seats is a routine part of the job.

 

妻(つま)が忙(いそが)しそうなので、家事(かじ)を手伝(てつだ)いました
Since my wife seemed busy, I helped her with the housework.
(×妻が忙しそうなので、家事を手伝ってあげました
