〜てしまう vs 〜ておく(~te shimau vs ~te oku) [JLPT grammar]

パーティー用にジュースを買ってしまいました
→パーティー用にジュースを買っておきました
I bought juice for the party.

 

〜てしまう implies that an action has been completed and cannot be reversed, often conveying a sense of regret. Including the meaning of egret
On the other hand, ”〜ておく“ suggests preparing something in advance.
In this context, you mean to say, ”I bought the juice in advance because I knew it would be needed for the party.“ Therefore, ”〜ておく“ is the appropriate choice.

 

Examples:

パーティーのためのケーキを焼(や)いておきました
”I baked a cake for the party.“
(I baked a cake in preparation for the party.)

 

今日パーティーがあるのに、風邪(かぜ)を引(ひ)いてしまいました
”Despite having a party today, I’ve caught a cold.“
(Unfortunately, I‘ve caught a cold before the party.)
