[JLPT grammar] How to say “I have not eaten breakfast yet.”

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N4 course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student’s sentence]

朝ごはんをまだ食べませんでした。

*あさごはんをまだたべませんでした。

[My correction]

朝ごはんをまだ食べませんでした。
→朝ごはんをまだ食べていません
I have not eaten breakfast yet.

まだ indicates that the action or event has not been completed.
If you use まだ, it means that breakfast time is not over yet and you can still have breakfast now.
So we don’t use the past tense 食べませんでした with まだ, but we use the present progressive tense 食べていません.
If you want to say, “I didn’t eat breakfast today,” say 朝ごはんを食べませんでした without まだ, and it is already past breakfast time.

e.g.
明日(あした)までのレポートがまだ終(お)わっていません
I have not yet finished the report (that has to be submitted) by tomorrow.(There is still time)

その映画(えいが)はまだ見(み)ていません
I haven’t seen that movie yet.(There is still time)

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊
